Reddit has no followers, so engagement means upvote ratio

Reddit is the one platform here where the standard formula does not really apply. There is no follower feed doing the distribution, so a post's audience is the subreddit, and the honest denominator is either the subreddit's subscriber count or the view count Reddit reports on your own posts. Either produces a rate you can compare between posts in the same community.

The two numbers Reddit actually surfaces are upvote ratio and comment count, and they say different things. Upvote ratio measures whether the community accepted the post, and anything from about 90% up is a good reception while a drift toward 60% means the post is dividing people. Comment count measures whether it started something, which is usually the point.

Comments per upvote is the ratio worth watching. A post with 500 upvotes and 8 comments was agreeable and forgettable. A post with 120 upvotes and 90 comments hit a nerve, and in most subreddits that is the more valuable outcome. Reading the two numbers together tells you more than any percentage will.

None of this transfers between subreddits. A post scoring 200 upvotes in a 20,000-member community outperformed one scoring 2,000 in a community of three million, and every subreddit has its own tolerance for links, self-promotion, and formatting. Benchmark against the front page of the specific subreddit you posted to, not against Reddit as a whole.
