Bluesky caps a post at 300 characters and the AT Protocol counts them as graphemes rather than bytes or code points. In practice that means an emoji counts as one character even when it is assembled from several code points, and an accented or non-Latin character counts as one each rather than two or three. The counter uses the same grapheme counting, so what it reports is what the protocol will accept.

Links are the other adjustment worth knowing. Bluesky attaches a URL to the post as a facet and displays it truncated, so WriteOnce charges a link about 22 characters rather than its full length. A post carrying a long tracking URL usually has more room left than a raw character count suggests.

Three hundred is deliberately close to X's 280, and most short posts move between the two without editing. The difference is that Bluesky does not collapse posts behind a See more link, because at 300 characters there is nothing worth collapsing. Everything you write is visible in the feed, which is a genuine advantage over every other platform on this list.

Hashtags work on Bluesky and are indexed, but one or two is the practical ceiling on a 300-character post where every tag competes with the sentence. Bios run to 256 characters, noticeably more room than X gives you, which fits a short identity line plus one clear cue about where to go next.
